Our Club
About Our Instructor
The Club is ran
by Mr. Lee-David Newman, a 3rd Dan Black Belt who has been training at
Bristol Academy under Master Michael Dew 7th Dan for many years
having first graded in early 1995. Lee-David has also been Teaching at
Bristol Academy since 2000.
He has been
going to Tae Kwon-Do Summer Camp for many years and is a team
leader at Adults and Juniors Camp. He strongly endorses training
outside of the Dojang and attends nearly all of the TAGB
functions throughout the year.
Lee-David was born in Bristol and grew up in the
St George area very near to St Georges Park, where like most of the children in
the area, he spent most of his spare time when growing up. As a teenager Lee
spent many hours riding [and
falling off of] BMX Freestyle Bikes, a sport he still loves today, only now he
watches it rather than takes part in it.
As a child he attended Summer Hill Junior School before he went on to
Speedwell School, leaving at 16 with several GCSE's to become an apprentice
electrician. He studied at Brunell College where he gained 3 City and Guilds
Certificates and worked on construction sites all over the South West,
including Lloyds Banks at Cannons Marsh and The BBC on Whiteladies Rd. After
around 3 years Lee had decided that this was not the career for him as he did
not enjoy working on building sites in the middle of winter, (he's not a big fan
of being cold!) After that he had a variety of different jobs and now works as
an Administrator for one of the countries biggest electrical wholesalers. He has
worked for them since 1997.

Events
Throughout The Year
Tournaments
There are now 5 local tournaments every year (the South West Championships, the English Championships, the Welsh Championships,
the Southern Championships and
the British Championships). Many of our students have entered
these for both patterns and sparring, and a number of them have done very well.
These events are great fun to watch or take part in.

World Championships
These are held once every 2 years. It's a very
exciting weekend, and definitely worth going to. Our Instructor Mr. Newman has
officiated in it twice running now, and one of our students, Frances Watson, has
even taken part in it.

Summer Camp
In August there are 2 South West Tae Kwon-Do Summer Camps held by Master Dew, one for the juniors which is
held in Chelwood near Bristol for a long weekend, and one for the adults which is
held in Veryan in Cornwall for a week. They are both hard work and lots of fun.

Kick 4 Clic
We hosted a Kick-a-Thon in 2008 to raise money for Clic Sargent; it was a
great success so we decided to make it an annual event. Hopefully next year we
can get more people involved and raise even more money for charity.
Christmas Celebrations
It's tradition for us to go out for a meal together to celebrate the festive
season. We also have a "Fancy Dress" lesson, a normal Tae Kwon-Do lesson where
everyone comes along in fancy dress, we do a bit of Tae Kwon-Do, play games and
have a laugh.
