Our Club
About Our Instructors
The Senior Instructor is Mr. Lee-David Newman (4th Degree Black Belt), he
teaches at Emersons Green with the help of Mrs Frances Newman (2nd Degree Black Belt).
Both are fully qualified as T.A.G.B. Instructors, hold enhanced CRB checks,
insurance and First Aid Qualifications.
Mr.
Lee-David Newman (4th Dan Black
Belt)
Lee has been
training in TaeKwon Do for 15 years and has always found it a
very enjoyable hobby, which has over the years become far more
than just a way to pass his spare time. TaeKwon Do is now part
of his everyday life and he admits that he wouldn't know what to
do without it. He has just qualified as a sports
therapist which compliments his interest in TaeKwon Do very
well. He opened the club in 2004 and has
watched it grow over the years as it has become more and more
successful.
Mrs Frances Newman (2nd Dan Black
Belt)
Frances has been training at Emersons Green TKD
since it opened in 2004 and has assisted with teaching since
2006. She qualified as an Instructor in November 2008 and was
promoted to 2nd Dan Black Belt in April 2010.
Frances has had great success in
all her gradings with 8 A-grades and 3 Grading Awards. She has many trophies from
sparring and patterns in tournaments, and
even reached the semi-finals in sparring at the World
Championships in 2007.
Although she
doesn't consider herself an academic, Frances also has a 2.1 BSc
(Hons) Degree in Sports Biology!
Events
Throughout The Year
Cardio-Fit
Sessions
On the last Saturday of every month,
normal lessons will be replaced with our
cardio-fit sessions. With the Juniors we
will hold a mini cardio-fit session,
allowing them to try our some of the
exercises, but keeping the class set-up
normal (with doboks and belts etc). With
the Adults we expect all students to
turn up in Dobok bottoms / combat
bottoms and a loose fitting suitable
T-shirt but no belt. The lessons will be
fairly strenuous but informal, aimed at
improving cardiovascular fitness, muscle
strength, speed and sparring ability
with a variety of challenging but
enjoyable activities using an array of
fitness equipment from pads to hurdles.
Grade will not matter, the Black Belts
will sweat with the beginners, as all
activities are non-syllabus and aimed at
being challenging but suitable for all
levels of ability.
Gradings
There are four colour belt gradings held every year, in January, April, July
and October. There are also two black belt gradings held every year, in April
and October.
Tournaments
There are now 5 local tournaments every year (the South West Championships, the English Championships, the Welsh Championships,
the Southern Championships and
the British Championships). Many of our students have entered
these for both patterns and sparring, and a number of them have done very well.
These events are great fun to watch or take part in.
World Championships
These are held once every 2-3 years. It's a very exciting weekend, and
definitely worth going to. Mr. Newman has officiated in it three
times running now, and two of our students have taken part.
Summer Camp
In August there are 2 South West Tae Kwon-Do Summer Camps held by Master
Dew, one for the juniors which is held in Chelwood near Bristol for a long
weekend, and one for the adults which is held in Veryan in Cornwall for a week.
They are both hard work and lots of fun.
Christmas Celebrations
To celebrate the festive season we hold a "Fancy Dress" lesson, a normal Tae Kwon-Do lesson where
everyone comes along in fancy dress, we do a bit of Tae Kwon-Do, play games and
have a laugh.
